Remember Anthony Mulhearn Killed By New Jersey Transit Train Near Jersey Shore While In The United States On His Visa From Ireland Dec 21, 2022
SPRING LAKE, NJ - A 24-year-old Irish citizen staying in Spring Lake on a visa was identified as the man struck and killed by an NJ Transit train last week, officials said.
Anthony Mulhearn, of Mullinavat, Ireland, was struck and fatally injured by a North Jersey Coast Line train shortly before midnight on Thursday near Spring Lake station, an NJ Transit spokesperson told Patch.
Around six customers or crew were on board the NJ Transit train at the time of the incident, the spokesman said. There were no injuries reported to those on board.
The train left Bay Head at 11:34 p.m. and was scheduled to arrive in Long Branch at 12:13 a.m., the spokesman said. The train was reportedly the final eastbound shuttle train of the night from Bay Head to Long Branch for the night.
"Always quite, polite and courteous, Anthony will be greatly missed by all who knew him," Good Counsel College, where the Irishman went to secondary school, wrote in a social media statement. "Our sympathies to his parents, his brothers and all the Mulhearn family. At dheis Dé go raibh a anam."
Local sports club Mullinavat GAA and Waterford Youth Arts also described the 24-year-old as an enthusiastic community member and "wonderful person," local Irish media said.
New Jersey Transit Police are currently investigating the incident.
