BELMAR, NJ - A 73-year-old Jersey Shore woman was fatally struck by an NJ transit train over the weekend, officials said.

Belmar resident Cynthia E. Sussman was struck and fatally injured by a North Jersey Coast Line train around 9:19 a.m. on Sunday near the Church Street crossing in Spring Lake, NJ Transit spokesman Jim Smith told Patch.

Around 25 customers and crew were on board at the time of the incident. There were no additional injuries reported.

The train initially departed from Long Branch at 8:46 a.m. and was set to arrive at Bay Head at 9:31 a.m., Smith said.

New Jersey Transit Police are leading the ongoing investigation.
