Ferriero, a seventh-grader at Avenel Middle School, was struck and killed by a North Jersey Coast Line NJ Transit train as it passed through Avenel on June 19. And it is very likely there are few who remain who remember that that rail service — Erie Lackawanna back in the day, it eventually evolved into NJ Transit — was responsible for one of the greatest tragedies the town ever saw.
