Pedestrian struck and killed by NJ Transit train

A NJ Transit train struck and killed a pedestrian late Thursday night in Elizabeth, officials said.

At around 10:45 p.m. Thursday, a Northeast Corridor train that had departed from New York Penn Station fatally hit a pedestrian just west of Elizabeth Station, a spokesman for NJ Transit said in a statement. There were no other injuries reported.

Approximately 300 customers and crew were on board at the time of the fatal strike.


Service on the Northeast Corridor and North Jersey Coast Line was temporarily suspended in both directions. Service has since resumed.

As of Friday morning, no information on the victim had been released. NJ Transit Police was leading the investigation, the statement said.

Remembering  Adeline Derephonse, age 53, of Irvington, NJ who was killed by Coach USA bus driver  The pedestrian who was struck and killed by a bus in South Orange on May 21 has been identified as Adeline Derephonse, age 53, of Irvington, NJ. The incident is being investigated by the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office and the South Orange Police Department. No charges have been filed at this time and the investigation is active. Derephonse was stuck while in the intersection of South Orange Avenue and Valley Street in South Orange Village Center and pronounced dead on the scene. According to Thomas Fennelly of the ECPO, “The incident occurred at the intersection of South Orange Avenue and Valley Street. A female pedestrian was struck by a Coach USA bus.
