Remembering  Montclair's Train Death Victim David N. Levy

The death of a 43-year-old Montclair man who was struck and killed by a train Monday morning is being investigated as a "possible suicide," Senior Public Information Officer for NJ Transit William Smith said Wednesday.

David N. Levy died near Laurel Place when he was hit by the 6:45 a.m. Montclair-Boonton train bound for Hoboken near the Mountain Avenue Station.

"Based on interviews," Smith said, "it appears that the deceased entered the area of the track and did not attempt to remove himself when the train was approaching."

Smith said the information comes from eyewitnesses, including crew members, who were interviewed by NJ Transit Police.

A makeshift memorial of a few candles and flowers sat near the tracks just off Laurel Place Wednesday. On one candle were written the words, "God Bless This Soul."

None of the 400 passengers and crew members aboard the train were reported injured.

This is the second train fatality in Montclair this year. A teenage boy was killed in June when he stepped onto the tracks near Watchung Plaza in what was ruled as a suicide.

Smith said the investigation into Monday's death remains open.

Services for Levy will be held on Thursday, at 11 a.m., at the J. L. Apter Memorial Chapels, 486 Pompton Ave., in Cedar Grove. https://patch.com/new-jersey/montclair/train-fatality-a-possible-suicide-nj-transit-says
